Amidst soaring house prices, the Labour government have announced a new policy to build 18,000 state houses by 2024, with more housing policies set to follow over the year. Community groups have levied criticism that the policy doesn't go far enough.

The number of people in south Auckland on the Ministry of Social Development’s Housing Register has grown rapidly since 2018 and not enough new state houses are being built to keep up with demand.

The government has revealed its Public Housing Plan for 2021 to 2024, which includes 8,000 additional public and transitional housing places. However, not everyone in the industry is satisfied with the announcement.
