Supporting Families to Succeed
The Trust offers a comprehensive programme that supports low income families
to find affordable and appropriate housing as well as preparing them
to sustain their own home. Our programme currently includes:
| • |
Emergency accommodation for 13 families; |
| • |
Advocacy, support and crisis intervention offered at Monte Cecilia
House in Mangere and in the community; |
| • |
In-house programmes that encourage families to take responsibility
for paying rent, building up savings and household maintenance; |
| • |
Access to other support services such as health, counselling, and
budgeting; |
| • |
Weaving and sewing classes; |
| • |
A playgroup for the under 5s; |
| • |
Donated furniture and household goods programme; and |
| • |
Ongoing support for families once they have moved into their own
homes. |
Our service delivery model enables low income families with a serious
housing need to have access to safe and affordable emergency housing
for a period of time, usually between 3 and 9 months. During this period,
families contribute to a savings programme, develop skills in household
management and benefit from comprehensive family support services. Families
stabilise their living situation, overcome their immediate challenges
and plan their future.
The programme assists families to transition towards an independent
housing solution, usually either a state house or private sector rental.
By the
time families have completed the programme they have enough savings
to cover the expenses entailed in moving into another home, such as
the
bond and rent in advance. Families have also developed other essential
resources
required for independent family living such as family vision, savings
discipline, job prospects and so on.
Housing Action
Monte Cecilia Housing Trust has a strong legacy of housing action initiatives.
We seek to promote housing justice by influencing government policy and
advocating for sustainable housing solutions. Our aim is to strengthen
local, regional and national housing networks. We also welcome opportunities
to collaborate with other community housing providers to improve housing
service delivery and offer various sustainable housing options.
The Trust is currently involved in local emergency housing networks,
the Auckland Regional Community Housing Network, the Waitakere Wellbeing
Project – Housing
Call to Action, and Community Housing Aotearoa, Inc.
Monte works to ensure adequate, affordable and secure housing for all
New Zealanders.
In 2006 the Trust provided over 4,000 nights of emergency accommodation
and assisted
74 families to find long term sustainable housing.
