Te Tiriti o Waitangi
Monte Cecilia Housing Trust recognises and respects the unique position
of Maori as Tangata Whenua o Aotearoa New Zealand. The Trust accepts Te
Tiriti o Waitangi as the founding document of our country. The Trust is
committed to developing relationships with Tangata Whenua which enhance
dignity and honour Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
In seeking to develop those relationships, the Trust is committed to
upholding the following three principles inherent in Te Tiriti o Waitangi:
Partnership: Aimed at achieving equality and equity between Maori and
other New Zealanders. This involves Monte in working together with Maori
to develop strategies for appropriate housing for Maori clients.
Participation: Aimed at ensuring positive involvement of Maori within
New Zealand society. This involves Monte in seeing that Maori participate
in all aspects of our service delivery.
Protection: Aimed at developing proactive initiatives to protect Maori
interests. This involves Monte in ensuring that Maori attain the same outcomes
as other clients, and in safeguarding Maori cultural concepts, values and
practices in our service delivery.
Our Logo
Our logo was designed by Elizabeth Pakinga, a Maori artist and former resident
of Monte Cecilia Housing Trust. Elizabeth offers the following explanation
for her logo design:
“
The triangle represents the whare that covers us in this time of need.
The large spiral in the centre represents the spiral of life. The flower
on the left represents the petals of the many cultures within this whare.
The koru on the right of the flower represents that we are all one, no
matter what our race, religion or colour. The base represents the many
mountains of life’s ups and downs. The koru inside them represents
the many different waves or seas our people have come from. The circles
represent the faith within ourselves that keep us going, no matter what
is put before us.”
