Laura and her family came to Auckland from Kaikohe after the owner of the house they had been renting sold it. Their property manager had told her there was a new property for them to move into once they moved out, but once out the property manager told them that the new property had fallen through, leaving them with nowhere to go.

Since then they have been working with Monte Cecilia to find a new place to live while staying in a single-room in an emergency housing motel.

“It takes a toll on your confidence as a parent not being able to provide for your kids, it’s quite dispiriting,” Laura says.

She says it’s doubly frustrating because they got a phone call that Monte Cecilia had found a home for them, but they could go to view it the government initiated a Covid lockdown, leaving them waiting for it to blow over before they can move in.

“The kids are excited to finally have a room of their own after staying cooped up in here, being in this situation really makes me realise the comforts of having your own place.”
